- [S170] Stanley B Kimball, Heber C. Kimball: Mormon Patriarch and Pioneer (Reliability: 3).
ON the 22nd of October, 1867, there was gloom in
the household of Heber C. Kimball. On that day died
Vilate, the partner of his youth, the noble and unselfish
sharer of his life's joys and sorrows. In the sixty-second
year of her age, after an almost unexampled life of toil,
heroism and self-sacrifice, God called her home to a
glorious rest.
One of the immediate causes which led to her death
though for months she had been a sufferer, and the
sun of her life was visibly setting was the untimely
end of her son, Brigham Willard Kimball, who died on
the plains while returning from a mission to England.
Vilate took the death of her son very much to heart,
and her grief over the event is supposed to have has-
tened the termination of her own life.

She wrote that Sarah was sick with a "nervous headache," and that
she herself had an upset stomach and could not eat much, and that "1 am
so sick and faint that I cannot set up a good deal of the time. . . . There is
cause for this," she added, "which cause you will no doubt rejoice in. A
hint to you is sufficient.""*' Seven months later, January 29, 1845, her sixth
son, Brigham Willard, was born.

...and in 1867, Brigham Willard Kimball, son of President Heber C. Kimball, died along Lodgepole Creek approximately where Kimball, Nebraska, is today. (The city is named after a railroad builder, not the missionary.)

...but Brigham W. grew worse and finally died July 24, 1867 on Pole Creek, about seventy-five miles west of Julesburg, where remains were also interred.
