Obituary: Major Peter Garff

Major Peter Garff, beloved father, brother, grandfather and great grandfather passed away December 14, 2000.
Born February 23, 1909 in Wallsburg, Utah to parents George Peter Garff and Tryphina Brimhall. Married Mary LaFarne Kimball August 26, 1936 in Salt Lake LDS Temple. They had five daughters. Active member of the Parleys 4th Ward, serving as high priest group leader, gospel doctrine teacher, stake missionary, and many other teaching positions.
Major came from a large family of dedicated teachers. He was loved and
respected as a teacher, coach, high school counselor and vice principal for many years in the Salt Lake School District.
A gentleman athlete, and recipient of the Heber J. Grant Award for outstanding scholarship and athletics at LDS High School in 1928. Masters Degree from University of Utah. He was an avid golfer and won the All-Church Senior Golf Championship in 1966. Major enjoyed hunting, the outdoors, and fishing, and taught his many grandchildren how to bait their own hooks and clean what they caught.
He will be remembered for his pancakes, harmonica and his strong testimony of his Creator.
He is survived by his five daughters: Mary Garff Barnett, Helen (Bill) Stone, Ann (Scott) Jenson, LaFarne Garff Hungerford and Diana Garff Gardiner, all of Salt Lake City, 23 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren; brothers and sister, Wayne B. Garff; J. Elmo Garff; Ina Garff Cannon. Preceded in death by wife, Mary LaFarne Kimball; brothers and sisters, Mark B. Garff; G. Lynn Garff; Minnie Garff; Thelma Garff; and Mary Garff Wells.
Funeral services 12 Noon Monday,
December 18, 2000 at MacKay Holladay Cottonwood Mortuary, 4670 S. Highland Drive. Friends may call Sunday 5-7 p.m. and one hour prior to services at the mortuary.
Interment, Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 S. Highland Drive.
