DEATH: EDYTHE K. WATSON
Published: Tuesday, July 27, 1993 12:00 a.m. MDT
Edythe Kimball Watson, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, age 83, passed away July 26, 1993.
Born May 7, 1910, in the town of Raymond in Alberta, Canada to Margaret Dunn and Solomon Farnham Kimball. She married John Francis Watson, June 20, 1934, in the Salt Lake Temple.Education was very important to her and she attended schools in Canada and the LDS University in Salt Lake City. Upon completion of her studies, she went to work in the Presiding Bishop's Office of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Upon her marriage she left her employment to raise a family, but devoted countless hours to Church and civic activities.
An active member of the LDS Church, she served as a Relief Society teacher, Highland Stake Young Women's President, Ward and Stake Relief Society President in Parley's Stake, and culminated her Church service as a member of the LDS Relief Society General Board for 14 years from 1964 to 1978 under both President Belle S. Spafford and President Barbara B. Smith . Her writing ability, gospel scholarship, compassion, willingness to work and familiarity with art, literature and homemaking skills allowed her to make significant contributions through her various assignments. Her talents were put to full use on the Homemaking, Spiritual Living, Social Services, and Display Committees as well as many other committees of the Board. She also served on the Church Curriculum Committee and wrote lessons and numerous articles for Church publications.
Important to her was the 14 years she served as a member of the LDS Hospital Board of Governors from 1975 to 1989. After she retired from the Board, she remained in emeritus status to help in the completion of various projects. She was instrumental in approving and implementing the plans for reconstructing the LDS Hospital and took a leading role in the acquisition of new equipment and technology for the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
However, the most important thing in her life was her family. She is fondly remembered by daughters and nieces for her instruction in candy making and readiness to share her time and talents. Her many friends treasured her keen mind and understanding heart.
She was a woman of warmth and graciousness who will be remembered by all for her kindness and consideration.
She is survived by her husband, John Francis Watson; her children, Jane Ellen Watson Hales and her husband Fred R. Hales, of Vestal, New York, John Kimball Watson and his wife Barbara Brown Watson, Mark Kimball Watson and his wife Linda Mayne Watson, Mary Frances Watson Rich and her husband Christopher Bowman Rich, all of Salt Lake City; her brother, Dr. F. Heber Kimball; 19 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents; her brother, Dr. James LeRoy Kimball; her sisters, Zula Pomeroy Kimball Coleman, Jeanne Kimball Whitney and Mary LaFarne Kimball Garff; and her grandson, David Brown Watson.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 29, at 12 Noon, at the Parley's 6th Ward, 2350 South 2100 East. Friends may call Wednesday, July 28, from 6-8 pm, at the Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, and at the Church on Thursday, for one hour prior to the services.
Interment, Salt Lake City Cemetery.
