FRANCIS MARTIN POMEROY, (Martin, Jude, John, Noah, Joseph, Eltweed). b. Feb 22, 1820, Smers, Conn.; apprenticed to an uncle when a young boy, who required of him hard labor without much recreation, an instance of which is that the day before a circus came to the village he asked his uncle's permission to attend. The uncle handed him a spelling book and said: "If you will learn this book by heart you can attend." All night the boy studied the book, and just before the time for the cirucs he came in triumphant, and to the surprise of his uncle, he repeated the entire contents of the book, word for word. However, when fifteen years of age, he ran away and boarded a whaling ship, and eventually became Captain of a whaling vessel. He was shipwrecked off the coast of Mexico and was the only survivor of the crew. He remained in Mexico two years and became an excellent linguist in the Spanish language. In 1846 while at New Orleans, he associated with some Mormon elders, and after carefully investigating the Gospel was baptized to that faith. Of the first company of 143 men, 3 women and 2 children, made up by Brigham Young to piioneer the roadway to the Rocky Mountains, he was one of the number, and assisted as a pioneer in settling up the valleys of Utah, Idaho, and Arizona. In 1864, as a pioneer in Idaho, he settled at Paris, where he engaged in farming and running a saw-mill until 1878. He then moved with his large family to Mesa, Arizona, where, with a spirit-level and straight edge, he assisted in laying out and building the Mesa Canal and settling the now prosperous city of Mesa.
