| Zelda Lafawn Gee [Brown] (1906-2002) - Obituary - Deseret News - 3 Feb 2002 Zelda Gee Brown passed peacefully in her sleep Thursday, January 31, 2002, in Salt Lake City, Utah, at the age of 95. Born June 1, 1906, in Gunnison, Sevier County, UT she was seventh of the ten children of William Gee Jr. and Anna Sophia Olsen Gee.
Zelda attended school in Salina, UT until she was ready for high school and then moved to Salt Lake City, where she graduated from East High. She and her high school sweetheart, Mark Cummings Brown, were married June 28, 1927, in Nephi, UT. Their marriage was solemnized June 24, 1940, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
They lived in Ogden and Provo, UT and later in Santa Paula, CA, for ten years while Mark was employed by Sears, Roebuck, & Co. Then, after moving back to Salt Lake, they opened their own furniture store, Mark Brown Home Furnishings, in 1947. Zelda was actively involved in this undertaking, working side-by-side with Mark for over fifteen years. After moving the business from State Street to 900 East in 1964, they changed its name to Mark Brown & Sons, and then in 1969 they re-opened their store as "The Carriage House," exclusively carrying Ethan Allen furniture. This business is still owned and run by family members, and Zelda has followed its progress with great interest.
Mark passed away Nov 6, 1978, but Zelda still found great joy in their home, family and neighborhood for many more years. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, delighting in her grandchildren, the achievements of her family, and the beauties of her garden and nature. She loved Parleys and Parleys Sixth Wards, where she lived and served in many capacities for over forty-five years. Zelda was always generous with her love and her time. Her unfailing optimism and gracious good nature drew many friends and ensured her family's love and appreciation for her.
Zelda is survived by her three children: Mark William and Ida Jean Brain Brown, Allen G. and Judy Juhlin Brown, and Barbara B. and John K. Watson, all of Salt Lake City, Utah. Her grandchildren are Mark and Susan Brown (SLC), Janet and Redd Smith (The Woodlands, Texas), Paul and Sharon Brown (Wilmette, Illinois), Laura and Terry Miller, Jennifer and Chris Madsen, Jamie and Becky Brown, Matthew and Crystal Brown, Sarah and Brett Hopkin, Mary Jane and Taft Price, John and Melody Watson, Michael and Natalie Watson, and Elizabeth and Luke Bradley, all of Salt Lake City. She knew and loved each of her 23 great-grandchildren, as well. A grandson, David Brown Watson, preceded her in death. Zelda is also survived by her brother Garney Gee and his wife Evelyn (Salina, UT), and her sisters-in-law, Chrystal Brown (SLC), Jerry McMillan (SLC), Dorothy Gee (Cypress, CA) and Julia Gee (Palm Springs, CA).
Services will be 12 noon Tues. Feb 5, 2002, in Parleys Sixth Ward, 2350 S. 2100 E, SLC. Friends may visit with the family prior to the services 11-11:45 a.m. or Mon. 6-8 p.m., Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 E. 1300 S, SLC. Interment, Salt Lake City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to The Society to Prevent Blindness, 661 S. 200 E, SLC, or a charity of your choice.
The family expresses its sincere thanks for the loving care that Zelda received from her friends at Cottonwood Creek Retirement Community, Willow Wood Care Center, and Heritage Hospice, and for the support and kindness of friends and family.
